The Complete Plate
I am so excited for this season of the new year and new resolutions! People want to get in shape, live a healthier lifestyle, and cast off bad habits, which means I am getting a lot of questions about how to actually do this.
A couple of facts… 2/3rds of Americans are overweight, and 1/3 are considered obese. Though these numbers are rather staggering, what is more concerning is how obesity is linked to chronic disease like type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and certain types of cancer. Living a healthier lifestyle is not just about getting into your high school jeans or deprivation, it is about nourishing your body, so that you feel better, look better, and have a better chance of being healthier.
There are many factors that you CANNOT control; however, you can control your nutrition, so that is a good start.
Here are a few guidelines to help you build the complete plate.
- Aim to eat a minimum of 10 grams of protein at every meal.
- Keep the carb content to 30 grams or less.
- Include 5 grams of fiber
- Eat five small meals and do not go more than 3 hrs. without eating.
That is ideal, and I recognize that not every day is ideal, so focus on what you can do and return to the guidelines when you get off track.
If you need a plan to help get started, I invite you to join the 24 Day Challenge Webinar on Monday at 7:00 cdt. The 24 Day Challenge is an introduction to living a healthier lifestyle, not a diet. Register online here.
